DE-STRESS WITH PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP – Project NSG 2022

Stress is an inevitable part of life, and it can take a toll on our mental and physical well-being if left unmanaged. Work-related stress is the primary source of stress for 62% of the employed population aged 20 to 64, according to a Statistics Canada General Social Survey. The inability to manage stress can lead to chronic conditions that affect our daily lives.

Photography has been recognized as an effective therapy for reducing stress and anxiety. The process of visualizing, composing, and capturing an image requires focus and attention, drawing the photographer into a meditative state. This process of mindfulness enhances self-worth, brings focus to positive experiences, and even reduces the stress hormone cortisol, according to research published in The Connection Between Art, Healing, and Public Health: A Review of Current Literature.

To leverage the therapeutic benefits of photography, a workshop was hosted as a form of therapy for destressing. Phone cameras are equipped with advanced features, making it easier for people to explore photography as a hobby. The workshop was designed to inspire and experience the benefits of photography, rather than merely teaching technical skills.

The workshop was promoted through Facebook and posters displayed at Richmond Libraries, and registration was done through Eventbrite. Participants learned the technical and creative aspects of photography and had the opportunity to practice them. The workshop included two fun photography competitions to motivate everyone to practice and take awesome photos.

During the workshop, participants were given an assignment to take photos using the techniques they learned, and submit their best shots. The winning photograph was selected based on constructive criticism and was awarded a Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L Camera Bag. The second competition was held after the workshop, where all participants were given a week to take photos around their neighbourhood and share them. The winning photograph was selected based on public voting, and the winner received a Peak Design Tote camera bag. These competitions encouraged everyone to enjoy the benefits of photography while also having fun.

The workshop was a huge success, and participants left with a newfound appreciation for photography as a therapeutic tool. By providing a creative outlet and mindfulness practice, this workshop connected the community and provided a means for individuals to reduce stress and find a renewed sense of purpose through photography. As a result, we will continue to host de-stress with photography workshops to empower individuals to explore the benefits of photography as a tool for relaxation and self-care.
